Back in 1972, the goals of the Clean Water Act were to end all pollution in our rivers and lakes. And while we're much better off than we were 35 years ago, 40% of our waterways are still considered dangerous for fishing and swimming.
Our pipes and treatment plants are getting old and are in need of repair. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that hundreds of billions of dollars are needed to address these problems. Yet the federal government has been cutting funding for years.

Clean Water is vital. We need to plan ahead for future generations by creating a clean water trust fund so that communities across America can keep their water clean, safe and affordable.

The U.S House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed the Water Quality Financing Act of 2007 to provide $1.7 billion for clean water (read more). And thanks to the hard work of Clean Water America's supporters, a long-term trust fund approach was included in the bill and has become a mainstream part of the discussion.

Now the Senate must act.
